Age Is No Barrier to New Frontiers

Age Is No Barrier to New FrontiersIn both business & society, we’re quick to write-off people when they reach a certain age. It’s called “ageism”.

The last form of discrimination is what others would call it – and rightly so! They’re told that they’re too old for this, that and the other, over and over.

We hear phrases like: “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks” or people themselves have bought into the idea that, “I’m way passed my sell-by date”.

Personally, I would have thought that with age comes knowledge, experience, wisdom, insight, an understanding of people and life, along with a host of other “usable” qualities and abilities.

Let’s take a brief look at an example of someone, who at first glance may have appeared “too old” for the task.

A classic Biblical example which comes to mind, is Moses. At the age of 40, he is earmarked as the one who would lead the Israelite captives out of Egypt. However, it would be another 40 years before that would actually take place. When it did, he led over 3 million men, women, children, along with a vast mixed company out of Egyptian captivity! No small feat.

Had you met Moses, and he were to tell you of his assignment, you would probably have laughed in disbelief.

Is that how we sometimes respond to older ones when they tell us about their hopes, plans, and dreams? We shouldn’t. We should give them the honor and dignity which they deserve.

Are we the one who tells a person they’re too old for the job?

In business, we ought to find new ways of utilizing the wealth of talent and experience older ones have to offer. And today, in some places, you’re classified as “older” if you’re over 50!

So, if you’re reading this and over the age of 50, what can you do to increase your value to your present employer for example?

You can take the FREE Personal Strengths Profile . It will provide you with a very detailed and accurate report on your key strengths. You can then use this data with your current or prospective employer. This will help to place you in a stronger position in the job market, or help to utilize your skills and talents in other areas of your current profession. It may even open up opportunities you may never have thought about!

In this article, it’s my wish that no matter at what age you find yourself, we’re never too old to become more than we can be!

In coming months, I’ll be conducting the teleseminar The 7 Dimensions of Value & Motivation, which goes into more detail about how you can use the Personal Strengths Profile. Click the link to register:The 7 Dimensions of Value & Motivation
